Abstract:
The work investigated the ability of a native microalgal strain, identified as Chlorella sorokiniana IITRF, for removal of pathogens and nutrients from real sewage. The primary treated, secondary-treated and tertiary-treated sewage from a nearby sewage treatment plant (STP) was selected for the present study. STP employed M-COMBI for primary treatment, sequencing batch reactor for secondary treatment and ultraviolet disinfection for tertiary treatment. C. sorokiniana IITRF was cultivated in different sewage samples for a period of 12 days. The microalgal growth was maximum on 6th day with biomass concentration of 0.44±0.09 g.L-1, 0.22±0.05 g.L-1 and 0.32±0.03 g.L-1 in primary-treated, secondary-treated and tertiary-treated sewage respectively. A reduction of 0.49-1.26, 1.52 and 1.18-1.22 log units was observed in total bacteria count, Enterobacteriaceae sp. and Salmonella sp. was observed in sewage samples. Regarding nutrient removal, 84-91% nitrate, 98% phosphate and 70% COD reduction was recorded. The present results with real sewage validated the suitability of C. sorokiniana IITR-RF for real-world applications.
