Abstract:
The pulp and paper mills have been expanding and in order to ensure their competitiveness, new processes should be established both in terms of reducing solid waste landfill disposal, as well as the replacement of fossil fuels that are still used in the mill. This work aimed to evaluate the energy potential of bark (B), primary sludge (PS), secondary sludge (SS) and a mixture of primary and secondary sludge (MS). The sludge samples were obtained from a Brazilian high-yield pulp mill (thermomechanical pulping-TMP). A complete characterization of all biomasses was performed, determining the moisture content, higher, lower, and net heating value, elemental, structural, and immediate composition, and also the quantification of minerals and heavy metals. Lignin was the predominant component in all the biomasses evaluated. The secondary sludge presented the lowest higher heating value (HHV) (12.45 MJ kg-1 ). The high concentration of ashes in PS (26.58%), SS (40.46%) and MS (25.78%) interfered negatively with their heating value. The sludge also presented a high moisture content, making it unfeasible to burn without previous drying. However, the sludges have in their composition material rich in carbon, components that make them attractive as modern biomass for energy generation.
