Abstract:
The quantification and identification of Marginal Agricultural Lands (MAL) are currently important research and innovation topics in the European Union (EU) where there is still a need of improvement in the methodologies applied and in the accuracy of the results still need to be improved. This work presents a new approach to identify MAL in the EU by using a more detailed global datasets available and following an Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) based on expert opinions for setting the relative importance of the different biophysical limiting factors in each country. This new methodological approach was developed within the framework of the BeonNAT project and was applied to Spain resulting that more than 50% of the 11.3 Mha targeted agricultural lands were evaluated as marginal.
