Abstract:
Perennial cropping systems can fulfil desired ecosystem services and functions, described as private goods (e.g. biomass supply, income opportunities for farmers) and public goods (e.g. carbon sequestration, reduction of erosion risk, provision of shelter and habitats to protect biodiversity). However, there are several bottlenecks and barriers to the successful cultivation of perennial crops. This study aims to: 1) inform policy makers at EU and national level of opportunities offered by perennial biomass crops in addressing a number of societal challenges, including climate change, loss of biodiversity, and provision of feedstock for a green transformation of the economy into a bioeconomy, and 2) provide recommendations for supportive policies that foster the implementation of perennial biomass cropping systems.
