Abstract:
Feasibility studies on the performance of alternative fuels and the evaluation of their suitability for gasification purposes become necessary to better define the most adequate operating conditions to achieve optimal results. Extensive work has been performed regarding the simulation of gasification of biomass using commercial software (Aspen Plus, Comsol Multiphysics, ANSYS Fluent, …). However, the use of free-licensed codes would boost up the development of gasification processes using potential new feedstock in a costless way and the free code developed by Daniel Medeiros, based on CAPE-OPEN software, can represent a useful tool. In this framework, DWSIM software was tested as a potential suitable tool to simulate the thermochemical conversion of biomass using a kinetic approach. Simulation results from DWSIM were compared with those provided with a commercial software. Successively, and once validated, the model was used to study the effect of the Equivalence Ratio on the distribution of products. Finally, the features and the main differences between both software were highlighted. Lastly, the main capabilities and limits of DWSIM were discussed.
