Abstract:
Energy crops are industrial species that can generate biofuels/energy/bioproducts. Due to their tolerance, there is an interest to grow in marginal and contaminated soils, avoiding Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) burdens. This work aims to study fifteen species (Cynara cardunculus L., Arundo donax L., Cannabis sativa L., Helianthus tuberosus L., Linum usitatissimum L., Miscanthus × giganteus Greef et Deu, Sorghum bicolor L. Moench, Panicum virgatum L., Acacia dealbata L., Pinus pinaster Aiton, Paulownia tomentosa (Thunberg) Steudel, Populus alba L., Populus nigra L., Salix viminalis L., and microalgae culture) to select three to four to be further cultivated in marginal soils. This selection was performed through the Binary Multiple Decision Method (BMDM), a developed decision support system (DSS). Several parameters were collected for each crop. Generated data identify potential crops that can be cultivated to produce clean biofuels/energy/bioproducts to increase the sustainability of marginal areas in mainland Portugal. This study aims at the development and use of Binary Multiple Decision Method (BMDM) tool used in the evaluation and selection of alternatives, therefore, an useful decision support systems (DSS), modelled to reduce the issuance of subjective judgments through which parameters are compared with each other to get the best.
