Abstract:
The "Sustainable Forest Energy in Southern Savonia 2023-2025" project seeks to increase biomass availability in Southern Savonia, Finland, through the thinning of young forests. The project combines digital methods such as remote sensing and simulation with traditional forest management practices. It uses open data and agent-based modeling to create a virtual twin of a forest stand, allowing for the comparison of different harvesting methods under various scenarios. Knowledge dissemination is critical in this study, ensuring that research findings reach the right people and contribute to sustainable forest management practices. The project also engages in dialogue with forestry stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to promote more sustainable forest management practices by balancing forest management quality, climate considerations, and biodiversity. The strategies and methodologies developed in this project have the potential to serve as a model for other regions, helping to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy sources.
