Abstract:
In aquatic systems, essential biomolecules such as fatty acids, which fulfil important functions in living organisms, are produced by phytoplankton and passed on to zooplankton, fish and ultimately humans. The fatty acid profile is mainly determined by primary producers. Their fatty acid metabolism is, however, strongly influenced by environmental factors. Therefore, the rise in temperature due to climate change and the introduction of xenobiotics such as pesticides can have serious consequences for aquatic organisms and us humans. The main aim of the project XenoFat is therefore understanding the effects of temperature increase and pesticides on the nutritional value of organisms in carp ponds. For this purpose, carp ponds will be investigated regarding phyto- and zooplankton as well as xenobiotics. In laboratory experiments, the identified microalgae strains are cultivated at different temperatures in the presence of the identified xenobiotics. The microalgal biomass obtained is fed to zooplankton and the fatty acid content and pattern of the biomass will be analyzed. Based on these findings, the alteration of the nutritional value of these organisms by increased temperature and pesticides will be assessed.
