Abstract:
This paper examines the impact of public environmental policy as with a special focus on blend mandates, on innovations in advanced biofuel-related technologies. To better represent each technology of advanced biofuels by their different pathways, we chose to represent each technology by its knowledge base, constructing a database of IPC incidence using patent data for a panel of 27 EU member countries between 1990 and 2022. We perform a regression analysis focusing on public policies and market variables, as well as the relative advance of the technologies itself. We found that there is a critical relationship between the level of technological readiness of a technology, and the significance of the policy effects, where those who are closer to commercialization respond positively to increases in R&D and blend mandates, where those pathways who are lower in the scale, have a neutral response.
