Abstract:
The demand for bio-based products from forest and agricultural biomass has increased in recent years. However, there is still debate about growing these crops on arable land used for food and feed production. In order to assess five crops, two perennials, two annuals and one biennial, of interest to the industry, two intercropping field trials were carried out in Spain under Mediterranean climate conditions on marginal land. The establishment of the perennials and the biennial was checked and the yields of the annuals in the intercropping were tested. It was also evaluated if there was a relationship between them. Seville lavender, Siberian elm and melilot were successfully established. Safflower was the annual crop with better yields than crambe. No significant differences in yield were found in the interaction with perennial and annual intercrops. This study shows preliminary results that need to be completed in the following years.
