Abstract:

In this work, the adsorption separation of catechol, guaiacol and phenol from the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lignin was studied. Initial batch test runs were carried out on solutions of the model compounds with both deep eutectic solvent (DES) modified and unmodified XAD-4 adsorbents. Phenol was seen to have the greatest affinity for all adsorbents tested with the resulting Freundlich parameters indicating a higher adsorption capacity (Kf) of 5.169 and 12.522 for unmodified and DES modified adsorbents respectively. Catechol on the other hand was the least favorably adsorbed of the three molecules tested. Adsorbents were also tested using the ‘real’ HTL product. The GC-FID analytics showed the DES modified XAD-4 (300 mg) as having a greater selectivity for guaiacol, with an equilibrium concentration of 22.6 mg/L representing an 81.39 % guaiacol uptake. These results suggest the efficacy of DES modified adsorbents in the selective separation of the downstream product of the HTL of lignin
