Abstract:
This research work explores the opportunities and challenges in scaling up sustainable biofuel production though thermochemical biomass conversion technologies within the framework of the BioTheRoS project. With a specific focus on advancing biofuel production for aviation and maritime sectors, the project aims to develop efficient pyrolysis and gasification conversion pathways for lignocellulosic biomass. Key aspects include biomass feedstock selection, technological advancements and sustainability assessment, encompassing technical, environmental and market considerations. Through detailed modeling, experimental testing and demonstration at lab and pilot scale, the feasibility and effectiveness of these biofuel production pathways will be validated. Furthermore, potential integration of carbon capture and renewable hydrogen will be investigated to enhance sustainability. Techno-economic analysis as well as multi-criteria decision analysis will inform scalable and sustainable biofuel production, contributing to significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fostering market uptake. The findings of this study are to support both biofuel producers and policy makers.
