Abstract:

The Colombian government must comply with the peace agreements signed in 2016 with the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, for its acronym in Spanish) as a "Comprehensive Agrarian Development" with electrification of rural areas. The edaphic and climatic potential of large areas available for planting crops contributes to an economy based on agro-industry, generating enormous amounts of residual biomass. This article evaluates the most appropriate technologies to convert biomass into electricity in three regions (Amazon, Orinoco and Pacific) with large, isolated areas. The technical potential of agricultural residual biomass (AR), livestock biomass (LB) and municipal solid waste (MSW) is assessed. A global potential of 3,870.5 MW is obtained. Technologies include conventional Rankine cycles (CRC), organic Rankine cycles (ORC), and internal combustion engines (ICE) with power outputs ranging from 50 to 50,000 kW, investment costs ranging from 2,100 to 5,120 U$D/kW, and levelized electricity costs ranging from 0.074 to 0.252 U$D/kW. Conversion of biomass to electricity is an alternative for the agricultural sector; it allows them to better manage and add value to waste. As a novelty, it provides valuable information on the technical potential for generating electricity from biomass waste, which is not available in the published literature and allows the Colombian government to support its commitment.
