Abstract:
Restoring peatlands will significantly reduce green-house gases emissions. However, this will have an socioeconomic impacts on the communities dependent on peat-based industries. This paper highlights the research into environmental and impacts comparison of few alternative methods to peatland harvesting. Life cycle analysis (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044) and Eco-efficiency assessment (ISO 14045) are used for comparison. Wetland farming is the intermediary alternative between restoration and current usage. Preliminary list of products considered are reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) fluff as animal bedding, and energy and biochar obtained from willow (Salix, various species).
