Abstract:

Biomass integration plays an important role in the energy decarbonization process. Consideration of the biomass supply chain is crucial to successful biomass integration, with particular emphasis on economic optimization. However, recently, the environmental focus on biomass supply chain has been grown. In this article, we review relevant literature on environmental impact optimization of Biomass Supply Chain (BSC). The environmental criteria involve Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, land &water use, carbon price, and the endpoint effects such as acidification, eutrophication and global warming potentials. The Environmental Optimization (EO) could be realized through minimization objective or by setting an indicator threshold. This optimization is carried out either as a voluntary measure to analyze the sustainability of the biomass supply chain, or for biomass-related regulatory compliance. The adoption of environmental optimization often aligns with policies targeting emissions reduction, renewable energy integration, and waste management.
