Abstract:
Wheat straw lignin extracted by the CIMV process using organic acid media was analysed by Steric Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), 13C NMR spectroscopy, infrared ATR and Gas Chromatography (GC) to clarify the structure and reactivity of lignin. Lignin was esterified before analysis. The control of the esterification of lignin was conducted via infrared ATR (FTIR-ATR). The total hydroxyl functions in lignin were determined via preliminary saponification of propionylated lignin and measured via GC system. Phenolic groups were determined via aminolysis of propionylated lignin. The carboxylic acid content in lignin was determined by titration and SEC analysis of acetylated lignin was done. The extracted lignin was identified like a regular polymer with a low molecular weight and a low polydispersity index. All these results are in accordance with the preliminary studies of the molecular structure of lignin by APPI mass spectrometry conducted by J.H.Banoub and coll. The high chemical potential of lignin as a natural polyphenol is confirmed by the analytical results obtained.
