Abstract:
A single step saccharification of lignocellulosics using a new thermochemical process has studied to develop a simple and rapid saccharification method. Wood powder of Liriodendron tulipifera and Populus alba x glandulosa were used as lignocellulosic materials. They underwent a thermochemical treatment using a flow-type reactor at 350, 380, 400, and 425 °C under the pressure of 23 MPa. Wood powder (10 g) was suspended in 1 L distilled water mixed with 0.05 % HNO3 prior to the reaction. The suspension was pumped into the reaction tube at a speed of 100 mL/min. The reaction time was only 1 minute. The highest yield of monomeric sugars from L. tulipifera and P. alba x glandulosa were obtained at the reaction temperature of 350 °C and were 34.0 and 31.1 %, respectively. In the monomeric sugars, the yield of glucose and xylose of L. tulipifera at 350 °C were 14.6 and 17.0 %, respectively, whereas those of P. alba x glandulosa at 350 °C were 17.7 and 12.0 %. As a conclusion, this simple and rapid thermochemical saccharification process of lignocellulosics can be suggested as a cost-effective process for production of the second generation bioethanol.
