Abstract:
Because domestic heating appliances have the advantage to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas, their used greatly increase and is largely recommended by several European governments. However, some recent studies revealed that residential wood stoves and inserts are source of near a hundred of other chemical compounds. The most important of them in terms of emission factor and impact on environment and human health are carbon monoxide (CO) and fine particles. In the aim to reach this objective, a catalytic system, placed at the exit of the fireplace 15 cm up from of the duct fireplace was developed to reduce pollutants. Pollutant characterization of a domestic fireplace from FONDIS SA, according to two paces of functioning (nominal and low-charge), was performed with and without the presence of the catalyst. Moreover, fine (PM10 and PM2.5) an ultrafine (PM1 and PM0.1) particle distributions were characterized using an Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI), purchased from DEKATI. The presence of a catalyst drastically decreases emission factors of CO. If the catalytic system also presents efficiency towards total suspended particles emission factor, it does not affect emission factors of PM10 to PM0.1.
