Abstract:
The purpose of the work was to develop the whole production and use chain of reed canary grass (RCG), in order to find out the most efficient and economical production – use chains for different working conditions. Development work was based on combining the present knowledge, experimental studies and calculatory studies. The targets for development were harvesting losses, longdistance transport, crushing of RCG bales, making of fuel mixtures, power plant experiences from the RCG use, combustion of RCG and cost calculation of different production and supply chains. Technical development focused on finding the right machinery for particular work stage and right ways of action to perform that work stage. Also calculations were made to find out the significance of different factors related to work stages. One important target of development is the fuel handling at power plant. The cheapest total costs are for chain based on baling and crushing of bales at power plant. Therefore the goal of the future is to develop the power plant technology which enables the use of this production and supply chain. The project was carried out under the Finnish technology programme Climbus coordinated by Tekes.
