Abstract:
This work deals with the modelling of a high temperature chamber heated with a plasma gas and which is devoted to the cracking of tars produced during gasification of biomass. This reformer (TurboplasmaŠ) is a part of a more general process devoted to the production of electricity from biomass. In a first stage biomass is dried and gasified in a travelling bed gasifier using air with an equivalence ratio of 0.3. This product gas contains light hydrocarbons as well as tars. It is converted into a syngas free from tars in the reformer under investigation in the present study. The plasma torch produces a 5000K plasma gas. This allows to locally heat the incoming stream at a temperature higher than 1600K, thus, with an adequate residence time, an efficient degradation of tars occurs. The first step of this work is the development of a kinetic model to describe the thermal cracking of tars. Thanks to a bibliographic study model component for tar has been chosen, and a kinetic scheme has been established. Then this kinetic model is implemented in a complete CFD computation. The aerodynamic behavior of the vessel can be well understood and thus its design can be improved.
