Abstract:
The influences of tar concentration in wood gas on anode deterioration were evaluated by single cell test over the first 10 h using toluene as a model tar substance. The electrolyte supported single cells which were composed of Ni/ScSZ cermet anode, ScSZ disk electrolyte and LSM cermet cathode were examined Deterioration behaviors were evaluated by SEM image observation. The operating parameter in this study was the toluene concentration only: the steam to carbon ratio and the operating temperature of the fuel cell were constant in this study. No macrostructural deterioration was observed up to 10 g Nm-3 toluene concentration; however microstructural deterioration: nickel particles disappearance took place in the case of 10 g Nm-3 toluene concentration. This phenomenon is one of the anode deterioration phenomena, and the beginning of the disappearance should be criterion for diagnosis of anode deterioration in the case of ScSZ cermet anode, instead of macrostructural deterioration, because microstructural deterioration took place under the lower toluen load than macrostructural deterioration did. The tolerance limit of toluene concentration in hydrogen for Ni/ScSZ cermet anode judging from Ni particle disappearance were 3 g Nm-3 in the range studied.
