Abstract: | Bio-char and bio-coke production units are typically low and medium temperature working processes, which generate a product with average quality normally used as fuel, intermediate for active carbon or soil fertilizer. If now the carbonization or pyrolysis process is run at higher temperatures and at the absence of air, the production of high quality bio-coke is possible, which meets the special requirements of most metallurgical processes and therefore makes the substitution of fossil coal and coke as reducing agent in this industry sector feasible. The enormous amounts of needed coals and cokes in the metallurgy, which can be substituted by alternative reductants like biocoke, show the potential of possible CO2-reduction in these normally harmful processes. So, metal producing and recycling companies have the option to fulfill the environmental regulations and restrictions from authorities to reduce their CO2-footprint. Performed carbonization experiments with different agricultural residues at temperatures up to 1000 °C have shown successful results concerning achievable bio-char quality in comparison to fossil coke. Beside the charcoal quality also the emitted pyrolysis gases were investigated concerning their application potential. |
