Abstract:
The articles focuses on a technique of identifying unknown compounds, i.e. use of a relative retention time. Our research concerns Kovats and Lee retention indices for the 54 tar components identified in the syngas. The calculated Kovats retention indices were compared with the literature data obtained in capillary columns with three different stationary phases. The Kovats retention indices obtained using polar stationary phases considerably differ from those obtained using nonpolar ones. But in our research irrespective of the kind of stationary phase used, nonpolar or polar, a high correlation among all data was obtained. In order to evaluate the possibility of determination molecular mass and boiling temperature of identified tar compounds, correlations between Lee retention indices and molecular mass, and Lee retention indices and boiling temperatures were worked out. In the both cases strong correlations were found. It is concluded that on the basis of the calculated Lee retention indices, it is possible to predict molecular mass and boiling temperature of unknown compounds, which allows more correct its qualitative identification.
