Abstract:
The analysis of working times plays a crucial role in the logistics operations applicable to harvesting, evaluations of operating costs and economic return of the crops. The harvesting times are monitored by researchers, who detect the characteristics of fields and record harvesting operations times with laptop. The Agricultural Engineering Research Unit (CRA-ING) of the Agricultural Research Council (Rome), has developed, in collaboration with the firm Arvatec (MI), an innovative GPS system for monitoring and mapping harvesting times and sites of energy crops. The proposed methodology allows to map precisely the harvested surface defining the number of rows, their length, the net area and inter-row, and to assess the performance of the machine throughout the harvest season, in relations to the collected data of yield, fields characteristics, pedo-climatic conditions etc. The data are recorded automatically; it is, in fact, sufficient that the operator sets some parameters before starting work. The developed system could be used for planning and management the harvesting of energy crops for feeding large biomass power plants.
