Abstract:

The interest for renewable energies use for electric generation has claimed the attention on the development of innovative processes and systems for an efficient and economically sustainable employ of biomasses. The widely distributed availability of biomass involves the issue for a correct balance between high efficiency (and hence power size) plants and the costs for biomass transportation. At the present time, the green certificates available for short chain energy generation raised an high interest for micro generation plants. Since turbodinamic engines are not suitable for the use of pressurised water steam, two alternatives can be followed for small and micro size power plants, namely the use of other energy vectors such organic fluids and the employment of volumetric engines for water steam expansion. Following previous works carried out about the investigation of Wankel Steam Engine, a proper plant for its experimentation was built in the nearbies of the University of Pisa in the CRIBE (Interuniversitary Centre for Energy Biomass Research). This plant is presented in this work, showing its main features and component arrangement, as well as its steam production capability. Moreover, a new Wankel Steam Engine prototipe desing and construction is presented together with a proposal for new materials for low friction coefficient sealings construction and their application with experimental water film lubrication.
