Abstract:
The effect of seasoning shrub biomass was studied in the conditions typical of north-west Portugal. Biomass of gorse, heath, pine, acacia, bramble and rockrose was stored in piles, exposed to local weather conditions from November 2008 to April 2009. Piles with whole plants and with shredded plants were compared. The biomass was sampled initially, after 2 and 5 months by collecting whole plants and shredded biomass. The moisture increased over time, under the effect of rainfall, from 41 to 64% (wb). The ash content in the green parts decreased from 3.6 to 2.3% (db) during the storage time; in the brown parts there was no significant variation and the mean ash content was 1.2% (db). The results for shredded biomass show a large increase in ash content over time, explained by a more intense biodegradation process. The lower heating value for the whole plants had a small reduction over time between a maximum of 19.5 to a minimum of 17 MJ/Kg (db). In the shredded biomass the reduction was larger from a maximum of 18.5 to a minimum of 15 MJ/Kg (db). The heating value in the dry green fraction was larger than in the brown fraction, however the volatile content in the green parts is lower (77% db) than in the brown parts (81% db).
