Abstract:
The aim of this work is to study the influence of outdoor storage conditions on the Brassica napus straw properties for solid biomass production. The study has been performed in two Spanish locations representing different meteorological conditions. Two piles were built in each location, one of the piles was topcovered with a plastic film while the other remained uncovered during all the storage period. Weather conditions were monitored monthly. The following parameters were determined: moisture, dry matter losses, energy losses, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents, calorific values, ash, volatile matter, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur, and chlorine contents, as well as the composition of ashes formed from biomass and their fusibility. Results showed that the highest dry matter and energy losses were obtained in the uncovered piles compared to the covered ones. In addition, the highest moisture contents were found in the biomass samples collected from the bales placed on top of the uncovered piles, being in some cases as much as 80 %. However, moisture from bales of the covered piles placed at the same position was maintained below 16 %.
