Abstract:
This research aimed to optimise energy efficiency at a red meat processing plant in Australia through the use of process integration, using lower steriliser water tempetures and minimising the carbon footprint through the use of cogeneration and bioenergy. In the context of the export red meat industry in Australia, there is continual competition with the live export trade. The aim is to provide one pathway to a lower carbon economy for the sector which will not lead to the export of carbon emissions. Biogas produced from onsite wastewater treatment ponds used to provide site electrical needs using cogeneration was found to provide a significant portion of the total site electricity requirement, covering at least peak tariff periods when both heat and electricity were required. Biomass was used to supply the residual thermal energy requirements. In total, 64 – 82 % of greenhouse emissions could be saved.
