Abstract:
Increasing forest fuel use in Finland has resulted in intense competition of energy wood in certain areas. Currently, Central Finland represents the highest competition of domestic forest fuels. However, the map presenting regional differences of supply and demand potentials in Finland is about to be redrawn as the first large¬scale BtL-refineries are launched. This also affects the power plants in areas where the regional forest fuel market balance will be changed. This paper presents a spatial calculation model that can be used for re-optimising power plant's forest fuel supply in order to adapt to the new market situation. The paper includes case studies where possible changes in supply to the city of Jyväskylä were evaluated. According to the results, a 50% increase in fuel demand by the same demand point cause substantial increase in supply costs for the power plants in Jyväskylä, while the economical impacts of other locations' doubled demand are smaller.
