Abstract:
Microalgae have the potential of becoming an important energy source, and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for that, producing an organic liquid energy carrier usually called 'bio¬oil' or 'bio¬crude', besides gas, aqueous and solid products. The interest in this technology for microalgae conversion has significantly increased in the last years, leading to the publication of several studies. However, the knowledge produced is rather fragmentary. A detailed analysis of the available data is presented in this work, bringing together all the information currently available. The conclusions of this review work will be the guidelines for future experimental work with several algae species. The intention is to assess the effect of algae strain and –properties under otherwise identical conditions on the biocrude oil yield and composition.
