Abstract:
The use of biomass resources and distributed generation could be incremented and improved by the combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) generation, or trigeneration, in small and medium¬scale plants. One of the existing barriers to the take¬off of bio¬based trigeneration facilities are the severe effects that numerous troublesome solid biofuels can cause on the possible subsystems involved (Stirling engines, ORCs, adsorption or absorption chillers), specially on their heat source side. For instance, slagging, fouling and corrosion problems on heat exchangers as well as un¬wanted gaseous and particle emissions is a matter to be solved. Among the great diversity of biomass sources, alternative fuels (i.e., agricultural and industrial residual biomass as well as dedicated energy crops) can be considered as a promising energy feedstock in the medium to long term future. In contrast to stemwood based assortments, alternative fuels can generally be described as more troublesome fuels owing to their ash composition and concentration of ash-forming and trace elements. Based on these considerations, efforts have to be addressed to gain knowledge related to their ash properties influence on the performance of the technologies that might integrate a solid bio-fuelled CCHP system. This article presents the research carried out in a combustion experimental plant to evaluate the deposition on the components that are likely to integrate this type of plants. For this purpose, deposition probes have been installed in several points with access to the flue gases stream at different temperature levels, which can be considered as average values of power and cooling units heat source temperatures. The deposition occurrence at those gas temperatures have been tested for two pelletized biofuels, an ash¬rich one from eucalyptus forest residues, and a high quality stemwood pellet used as reference. Based on the experimental results, and considering the current state of technology, main factors of significant influence on the trigeneration system performance, when ash rich fuels are combusted, have been started to be identified. However, further work must be carried out in the same direction to obtain wider results and conclusions that will help to increase the sustainable development of the alternative fuels market by means of multi¬fuel conversion systems.
