Abstract:
Sustainable farming systems of biomass crops reduce negative impacts of tight crop rotations. By expending the spectrum of used species for bioenergy production alternative cropping systems can contribute an essential input to improve biodiversity of the agricultural landscape and raise field productivity. The aim of a current research project, starting 2011, is to investigate the ability of buckwheat and quinoa as late catch crops for biogas production following cereals as main crop. In a field trial with a duration of three years parameters like biomass yield potential, dry matter content, substrate quality, water use efficiency and biogas production of different buckwheat and quinoa cultivars, including two sowing times and two locations, will be tested. Results of the first year concerning dry matter yield, dry matter content as well as substrate quality are presented in this paper.
