Abstract:
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend towards more efficient utilization of agro-industrial residues, such as sugarcane bagasse and straw, as raw materials for industrial application in respect to biorefinery concept. Cellulose, the major constituent of all plant materials, represents a vast potential for a number of industries and has created a great deal of research interest. Aiming the utilization of cellulose, obtained from sugarcane straw and bagasse, as reinforcement in polypropylene composites, this work investigated the pretreatment and delignification processes performed for the obtainment of cellulose fibres. In natura sugarcane straw and bagasse were pretreated with 1% (w/v) sulfuric acid solution at 120°C for 10 min, followed by a delignification step with 1% (w/v) sodium hydroxide solution at 100°C for 1 h. The solid:liquid ratio was 1:10 (w/v) for both processes. Yields were determined for both reaction steps of pretreatment and alkaline delignification. For sugarcane bagasse the yields were 65.9% and 74% for pretreatment and delignification processes, respectively, and for sugaracane straw, the yields were 56.8% and 87.2%. Subsequently, chemical characterization of samples to quantify the levels of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin was performed.
