Abstract:
Currently the full potential for low¬ emission operation at high efficiencies of small¬scale (residential) biomass boilers for space heating cannot be exploited since there is still the need to optimize the plant control systems. They are currently based on decoupled control circuits with linear controllers. But a small¬ scale biomass boiler is a strongly coupled and nonlinear system. Therefore, the full potential in terms of low¬ emission operation and high efficiency can not be utilized in principle. To overcome this problem state¬ of¬ the art model based control methods needs to be applied but at the beginning of the work described in this paper no appropriate mathematical models for small¬ scale biomass boilers have been available. For this reason adequate models for all relevant parts of the boiler (fuel bed, primary and secondary combustion zone, heat exchanger as well as air and fuel supply) have been developed and experimentally verified within the work presented. The experimental verification showed a very good agreement of measured process variables and the corresponding variables calculated with the associated mathematical models. Thus, the models presented in this paper are a suitable basis for the model based control of small¬ scale biomass boilers.
