Abstract:
Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) can be a good alternative for biomass production in the Mediterranean areas. The aim of this study is to compare biomass productions of Siberian elm at the end of the second vegetative period in three localities with different edaphoclimatic conditions. Two localities are in Spain and the other locality is in Italy. The Spanish localities (Cubo de la Solana and Almazan) are sited in Soria, a province in Northern Spain where climate is extreme continental and the Italian locality is Casale Monferrato where there is a mild continental climate. The soil is very poor in Cubo de la Solana and the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil are better in the other localities. Spacing in the first two years of growth was not an important limiting factor, however soil characteristics seem to be a essential factor and the productión was not better from certain quantity of water (5000 m3 ha-1 in 2 years) when soils have bad quality. Siberian elm can grow with low input, but the yields are also low (1.65 -1 -1-1 -1 Odt hayr ). The greatest productions were achieved in Casale Monferrato (about 12 Odt hay ) where results showed that genetic differences are also very important.
