Abstract:
The R+D+i Programme ‘Energy Conversion of Cynara Biomass and Valorization of By¬Products' (acronym: CARDENER¬CM) has been conducted since January 2010 in the frame of the call for project proposals launched by the Autonomous Community of Madrid (Spain) for research groups with the support of the European Social Fund. The ultimate objective of the Programme is to assess the energy conversion potential of Cynara cardunculus L. for cultivation in the Region of Madrid, Spain. CARDENER¬CM covers a wide range of research areas including prospective GIS assessment, agronomy, biomass pre-treatments, fluidized bed combustion, fluidized bed air¬gasification, heterogeneous catalysis for biodiesel production, catalytic materials for valorization of glycerol via propanodiols, valorization of seed oil cake via furfural, valorization of side¬products and by¬products of the energy chain to functional ingredients. CARDENER-CM represents the joint effort of six research groups and one regional reference laboratory of the Region of Madrid (Spain). Progress made in the period 2010¬2011 is reported.
