Abstract:

In many European countries the production and use of biogas is increasingly recognized as a suitable and sustainable energy option in a renewable energy mix. Most biogas plants produce electricity in CHP plants due to technical availability of CHP systems and according support measures (electricity feedŽin tariffs). However, in many cases these plants or not, or only partially, operated in CHP mode. The problem of how to efficiently use heat from biogas plants at the European, national and local project level is addressed by the BiogasHeat project (Development of Sustainable Heat Markets for Biogas Plants in Europe) which is supported by the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme of the European Union. The objectives of the BiogasHeat project are: (1) to enable the economic and sustainable utilisation of heat from existing and future biogas plants; (2) to increase capability in biogas heat utilisation through analysis of technical options, feasibility studies, entrepreneurial strategy development of business cases and field testing; and (3) to increase capacity in biogas heat utilisation through capacity building actions, creating references with good practices, and demonstrating in which direction good practices in heat utilisation from biogas plants and support for respective market development can go.
