Abstract:
The Stirling engine biomass CHP technology enables the production of high value electricity and heat in an efficient way in applications below 300¬500 kWe electric power output. The pre combustor compromises the benefits of a direct combustion system, in terms of simplicity and an updraft gasification system, in terms of low dust emissions. The solution is developed for the utilization of dry fuels, such as pellets, which cannot be processed in an updraft gasifier. This can be achieved in the pre combustor by a controlled combustion that is realized by a proper air staging below and above the grate. This is an important issue that allows a good temperature and combustion control. In the pre combustor the combustion process is not completed, and some kind of syn gas produced. This is then finally combusted with pre heated secondary combustion air in the Stirling engine combustion chamber. In this paper the findings from a detailed evaluation on the thermodynamic potential, limits and existing boundary conditions for the optimization of the overall electrical plant efficiency are presented as well as the technology details about the pre combustor.
