Abstract:
The Belgian Governement wanted to have an insight in the biomass markets and use to follow up the trends and when necessary take some actions to direct the market in the right direction. The research carried out is a first step in that context. The goal of the study was to make an inventory of biomass use over the different sectors in Belgium. The study focused on the biomass streams where more competition can be felt. A database has been developed to give an overview on the total and local consumption of a certain biomass stream in Belgium. The local consumption is divided over the different sectors that uses the biomass (food, feed, materials, energy, chemicals). The research project is unique in the sense that for the first time facts and figures of the use of biomass of different sectors are brought together and can be used in the discussion on the most optimal use of biomass. The result of the study is a fully equipped Acces database covering import/export data of biomass for the last 20 years, biomass local production for a couple of years, local consumption for a couple of years and an insight of biomass use for 1 year.
