Abstract:
Glycerol is a by-product which arises in large quantities during the production of biodiesel. Some oleaginous yeast strains are able to consume glycerol as a carbon source. These yeasts are able to accumulate lipids more than a half of their own weight under certain growing conditions. One of these conditions is the limitation of nitrogen. Since the lipids gained from these yeasts are similar to vegetable oil in their composition of fatty acids, they can be used for the production of biodiesel.
