Abstract: | Reducing costs of biomass feedstocks is a key factor to ensure economic efficiency of biomass CHP gasification plants. A study has been carried out within the French project GAMECO to evaluate the technical, economic and environmental impact of the supply chains of a few challenging biomass feedstocks identified as offering lower costs than conventional biomass in France and being promising for fluidized bed gasification. The investigated feedstocks consist of agricultural residues, byproducts from the wood and agroindustry, waste wood and green communal waste. The scope of the study covers the entire life cycle of the biomass supply chain, from collection up to the gasifier, to obtain optimal biomass properties for fluidized bed gasification (e.g. particle size and density, moisture and pollutants content): harvest, comminution, drying, densification, screening, leaching, decontamination, transport, storage and handling. After a first selection of interesting feedstocks, a simplified Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is carried out in order to calculate the cost and energy consumption of each part of the biomass supply chain and to compare several supply chain options. Finally, the best low cost feedstock for CHP gasification applications in the electrical range of 1 to 10 MWe is selected. |
