Abstract:
The research, promoted by OIGA of Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forest Policies, aims at the evaluation of the productivity and the resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses of new poplar and willow clones to be used for the production of biomass in three different sites: two in the North of Italy, Cavallermaggiore and Pratosesia, and one in the South of Italy, Decollatura. Altogether twenty poplar and three willow clones are compared; nine poplar and three willow clones are present in all the sites. Poplar rooting was good (80%); willow rooting was excellent (90%) in the first trials; in the other two sites poplar rooting was around 70% while willow rooting was 78% at Decollatura, and less than 60% at Pratosesia. The production was good for poplars, 5-10 Oven -1 --1 -1 dry tons per hectare per year (Odt hayear 1) and high for willows (14-16 Odt hayear ) at the end of the first -1 -1 biennial cycle at Cavallermaggiore thanks to the irrigation; while it was around 3-8 Odt hayear for both species in the other sites. Some willow clones reached a very good production not only in Northern Italy but also in the South, where annual rainfall is over 1000 mm.
