Abstract:
Experimental tests on sewage sludge gasification and sewage sludge-derived char gasification have been performed in a lab-scale fluidized reactor in order to evaluate how a previous pyrolysis stage affects the subsequent gasification process. The previous pyrolysis stage led to structural changes in sewage sludge that seem to enhance the subsequent gasification reactions. Tar formation was significantly reduced during char gasification and noticeable changes in the composition of the product gas were found, such as a lower content of light hydrocarbons or a decrease in the CO2/CO molar ratio. In addition, gasification temperature and composition of the gasification medium (mixtures of steam and enriched air) were varied in both cases in order to analyze their effects. Temperature was found to be more influential than composition of the gasification medium in most of the response variables. This difference was even more noticeable in the results obtained from char gasification.
