Abstract:
Absolute ammonium acetate was tested in the liquid state as soaking agent to pretreat wheat straw, at 120 °C, for 5 hours at atmospheric pressure. The purpose of this work was to verify the effect of this ionic phase on the lignocellulosic structure, in terms of biomass solubility and enzymatic digestibility of the solid residue. Both shredded and milled straw was tested. After the soaking, soluble biomass was separated from the insoluble by water washing, the last was used for enzymatic hydrolysis trials. Compared to the raw feedstock, it has been achieved the solubilization of about the 20% of the biomass and a 3 times increase of the enzymatic digestibility.
