Abstract:
One of the major obstacles for the application of biomass gasification systems is the relatively high tar content of the producer gas that inhibits its use in engines or turbines or in catalytic processes like in methanisation or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis without further gas cleaning. The determination of the tar content with conventional methods is very time consuming and does not allow a continuous online monitoring of the gas quality. The approach, to avoid these drawbacks, is an online system that shows the tar concentration in the producer gas during the gasification process and allows an easy monitoring of its trend. The semi-continuous online tar analyzer via FID (flame ionization detector) was first developed at IFK around 12 years ago and is currently under further development for future commercialization. This paper will show results of new tests with defined tar species and concentrations in laboratory environment to demonstrate the analyzers general reliability and possible deviations between measurements and set points. For these tests, a special test gas generator for condensable hydrocarbons was set up at IFK. Furthermore, intended modifications how the system is improved in the new analyzer generation, based on the gained experiences, will be shown.
