Abstract:
Foundry coke has the functions of an energy carrier and carburizing agent in the cast iron production in a cupola furnace. Besides the fact that the prices of metallic charge materials and fossil fuels have increased significantly over the past years, some German cupola furnace operators are subject to the emissions trading system and must additionally obtain CO2-certificates for their required coke. Under these conditions the technical characteristics of biochar appear promising and have therefore been tested as an alternative for fossil foundry coke in the frame of a research project under participation of the German foundry industry. The main purpose of this research project was testing the performance and effectiveness of biochar as a substitute for foundry coke. The industrial cupola furnace experiments showed that the use of biochar makes a substitution of the foundry coke possible.
