Abstract:
Using problematic biomass such as straw in combustion processes requires an ideal match of combustion system and fuel. One of the problems that have to be overcome is poor ash melting behaviour. Sintering of straw ash occurs as low as 600 °C, resulting in agglomeration of ash particles in the furnace. Adding certain mineral components to the straw can raise those temperatures and therefore enable the use of this material for combustion. In a number of laboratory experiments, characteristic ash melting temperatures as described in CEN/TS 15370-1:2006 are determined. Then, kaolin is added, leading to a significant raise in the deformation temperature. In order to identify single components that influence these temperatures and to gain more reproducible results, a model ash based on real straw ash composition has been mixed. In the course of the studies the ash melting behaviour of different mixtures has been determined.
