Abstract:
Solubility of cellulose in water under hydrothermal condition was determined using a semi-batch reactor. Cellulose was loaded in the reactor, and water at specific temperature and pressure was delivered. The effluent was analyzed for the cellulose content. Water flow rate, pressure, and temperature were changed in the range of 20 and 60 mL/min, 8-12 MPa, and 220-310 oC, respectively. The loaded amount of feedstock affected the TOC of the effluent when it is less than 2.5 w/v%. Higher temperature resulted in larger amount of dissolved cellulose. The flow rate did not affect the dissolution characteristics. For the low temperature of 220 oC, the maximum amount of cellulose dissolved in this condition was about 70 mg/L while at the high temperature of 310 oC, it was about 250 mg/L.
