Abstract:

The interesterification of rapeseed oil was performed in a batch reactor changing the reaction temperature in the interval 120-210 °C and using several tin (II) compounds as catalysts and methyl or ethyl acetate as acyl acceptors. The yields in esters and triacetin increased with the reaction temperature. An important parameter to optimize was the acyl donor to oil molar ratio: too low values seemed to be detrimental while too high values does not alter significantly the values of yields in esters and triacetin. The ester yields were also affected by the nature of the alkyl acetate since the methyl homologue led to higher values of this parameter with respect to the ethyl one at similar operative conditions. The best performances of the interesterification of rapeseed oil were obtained with tin(II) octoate and tin(II) chloride.
