Abstract:
The supply of the annually increasing energy demand only through fossil fuels is not sustainable. Alternatively bio-energy can be used. State of the art is the upgrading of biogas to bio-methane or the conversion of biogas into heat and electricity. An innovative way is the conversion of biogas into hydrogen, which can be used for the ammonia synthesis or for fuel cells. Around 40 percent of the world's annual demand (500 bm³) of hydrogen are by-products of industrial processes, while nearly 60 percent are provided by the reforming of fossil fuels. Substitution with hydrogen converted from biogas is an important part of the German hydrogen infrastructure development and a chance for establishment of utilization technologies. The prototype for biogas conversion to hydrogen includes five segments: gas supply, gas purification, gas reforming, gas utilization and post-combustion. For the simulation of gas reforming, reaction kinetics from De Smet et al. and Numaguchi & Kikuchi were used. The simulation results indicated a full conversion of methane, a maximum hydrogen yield and a low carbon monoxide concentration in the gas, which is suitable for HT-PEMFC. The replacement of segments is possible so that alternative reactors for biogas conversion and the further use of this concept can be studied.
